Rotorua's a strange and wonderful place — geysers, bubbling mud, freshwater lakes, and native forest, all packed into one geothermal hotspot. There's a strong thread of Maori history and legend running through the region too, which adds a lot of depth beyond the natural scenery. You'll visit one of the geothermal attractions during the day, then wind down with an evening walk through a forest lit up after dark. Overnight: Rotorua

Christchurch feels different the moment you land — tucked between the Pacific and the snow-capped Southern Alps, with the Avon River winding lazily through inner-city parks and gardens. Today's drive takes you across the Canterbury Plains — a patchwork of green fields — before climbing through Arthur's Pass National Park and dropping onto the wild West Coast. This side of the island has a different energy entirely: rainforests, rivers, and glaciers that are, in a real sense, still moving remnants of the last ice age. Overnight: Glacier Region

Christchurch–Glacier Region: 240–380km (approx. 3.5–5hr)

Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers sit at a low enough altitude, with a mild enough climate, that they're some of the most accessible glaciers anywhere in the world. Look closely at the surrounding valleys and you'll see scars from where the ice has advanced and retreated over thousands of years — it's genuinely still happening.

Today's left open for you to fill however you like. Some travellers head to Punakaiki's Pancake Rocks; others go all in on a helicopter flight with a glacier landing and a hike across the ice itself. Either way, it's a good one to remember. Overnight: Glacier Region

It's easy to see why Queenstown's earned the title "Adventure Capital of the World" — the mountains here practically dare you to do something. Today's free, so it's really up to you: jet boats, gondola rides, a lakeside stroll, or nothing at all. Overnight: Queenstown

Golden tussock grasslands, snow-dusted peaks, and lakes that are an almost unreal shade of turquoise — today's drive hugs the edge of Lake Pukaki all the way to Aoraki Mt Cook, New Zealand's tallest mountain. Overnight: Tekapo or Mt Cook

Queenstown–Tekapo/Mt Cook: 256–266km (approx. 3hr 15min)

Make time to stop at Lake Tekapo — the little Church of the Good Shepherd sits right on the water's edge, with the glacier-fed lake behind it in a shade of blue that's hard to photograph properly. From there, it's back through braided rivers and open plains toward Christchurch. Tekapo/Mt Cook–Christchurch: 230–330km (approx. 3–4hr)
